SharePoint 2013 Needs Less Features, Not More (CMSWire)
Anyone interested in Microsoft SharePoint will have by now seen the new version. SharePoint 2013 is packed with lots of new and exciting features. Users can experience the revamped MySites, with Facebook style activity feeds and the ability to ‘follow’ pretty much anything. Developers have ‘apps’ to get their teeth into, allowing them to create SharePoint components in pretty much any language they wish. Then there’s the new interface, the ‘Modern UI’ (as we must now call it), with its stripped back look and feel. The list of new features goes on and on.

10 Serious Mistakes Companies Make with SharePoint (IDM)
There are many challenges to implementing SharePoint, both seen and unseen. As a result there are plenty of pitfalls and traps to fall into, and it is very challenging to pick just 10 mistakes. Poor governance, not having an intranet strategy, or not having an intranet committee are traditional mistakes, but hopefully there is more awareness about these issues now. Marcus Dervin, director of Sydney SharePoint/Office 365 consultancy WebVine. focusses on more specific issues that are often overlooked, but can derail a SharePoint project team’s best intentions.

Office 365′s Lingering Enterprise Problem (CIO)
Microsoft’s move over the past three years to an affordable cloud-based email, collaboration and productivity suite was a necessity to combat Google Apps. But getting past the education/small business level and into the enterprise has proven difficult. A brief history: In 2009, Microsoft launched BPOS (business productivity online suite), which made lightweight online versions of Exchange, SharePoint, Live Meeting and Office Communicator (later Lync) accessible via the cloud. Microsoft charged businesses — mostly small businesses, schools and government agencies — $120 per user, per year.

Office 2013 Feature Focus: Office on Demand (Paul Thurrott’s Supersite for Windows)
Anyone with a paying Office 2013 subscription can access streamed versions of several popular Office applications from any PC, even those over which they have no control. This feature, called Office on Demand, lets you temporarily use a cloud-based version of an Office application without installing anything on the local PC.

Does the US Understand Cloud Computing? (ZDNet)
The average American consumer doesn’t understand what cloud computing is or how it works, according to a national survey. The survey, undertaken by Wakefield Research and commissioned by cloud-technology firm Citrix, showed that many U.S. consumers believed it was weather-related, or something to do with pillows, drugs, heaven, outer space and toilet paper.

Windows 8: Hate It Already? Why Waiting for Windows 9 Won’t Help (PCWorld)
Conventional Windows wisdom seems to hold that every other version of Windows is terrible and needs to be fixed by whatever version comes after that. Does this mantra sound familiar? Windows XP, good. Windows Vista, bad. Windows 7, good. Windows 8, bad. Windows 9, good. That’s how it’s supposed to go, right?

Big October for Microsoft? Windows Phone 8 Rumors Heat Up (VAR Guy)
Microsoft appears headed for two big October splashes, first with its slated Oct. 26 Windows 8 and Surface RT debuts, and, according to the latest reports, a second extravaganza three days later for Windows Phone 8, perhaps in San Francisco or Los Angeles. When asked to confirm, Microsoft declined to comment, but the company didn’t deny it, either. Here’s what we think we know at this point:

What Comes First, the Software or the Solution? (AIIM)
In the SMB market it’s still hard to find a company that’s pleased with their SharePoint implementation. While the IT group may say that it’s coming right along, the end users frequently do not. Don’t get me wrong, SharePoint is a terrific collaboration tool if properly adopted. But the “if properly adopted” part of that statement is a giant “if.” There are many reasons any project can go right or wrong. I’d recommend that before you go down the road of building a platform from scratch, consider the software packages that have already been built, tested and supported.

Configuring Forms Based Authentication in SharePoint 2013 (SharePoint Solutions Team Blog)
Now that the first beta for SharePoint 2013 is available, I thought it would be a good idea to walk through the process of configuring Forms Based Authentication “out of the box” without an add-on such as Extranet Collaboration Manager (ExCM). Doing this will allow us to see both the similarities and differences between SharePoint 2010 and 2013 as well as highlight the limitations of a “basic” FBA site that ExCM addresses so well.

Strategize App Authentication In SharePoint 2013 (ARB Security Solutions)
App authentication is the validation of an external app for SharePoint’s identity. It also allows for the authorization of both the app and an associated user. For this to occur, the app requests access to a secured SharePoint resource. An external component from SharePoint Store App or an App Catalog App that is located on the intranet or internet attempts to serve content. This allows for a new set of functions to be achieved. It enables the apps to include data that comes from SharePoint resources that can be displayed for users.
